In 1247, warlord Aldric the Undyed ended forty years of border war by declaring that each clan would be assigned a permanent color. The color became the clan. The clan became the nation.

Key turning point: The Chromatic Decree of 1391 formalized birth-color assignment, making it hereditary and irrevocable. It has never been amended.

Ruling System — The Chromatic Council: nine hereditary seats, one per primary color family. Decisions require a majority of hues.
National Sport — The Grand Chromatic: annual competitive re-dyeing ceremony. Citizens reaffirm their birth-color publicly. Crowds judge the depth and purity.
Currency — The Tint, divided into 84 Shades. Exchange rates shift monthly based on dye scarcity.
Language Note — Draven, an ink-toned Italic branch. The word for "crime" and "wrong color" are identical: graesk.
National Dish — Hue Stew: a slow-cooked root broth whose color must match the cook's birth-color. Inspectors check.

An estimated 4% of citizens are born with birth-colors that no dye can accurately reproduce. The government calls this an administrative error.

Dravenscolt sits landlocked in a temperate river valley — the Velthorn Mountains to the north, the River Drave threading through the center (it runs teal year-round from mineral deposits), the southern Dyefields where the dye-plants are cultivated.

Capital: Tintbury (pop. 340,000, at the river bend)
Districts: Ashvane east (gold district) · Cerulith west (teal district)
Climate: Mild wet winters. Dry harvest summers.

At Tintbury's morning market, citizens wear only their birth-color. The butcher's stall is wrapped in plum cloth. The bakery displays gold awnings. Mismatched outfits are reportable to the Color Compliance Office.

According to sealed Chromatic Council ledgers, approximately 1 in 200 citizens is born with a color that existing dyes cannot match. These individuals are registered as Undyed — a legal status that technically does not exist in the Constitution.

Undyed citizens cannot hold property, marry, or order Hue Stew. The Council's official position: this is a dye availability problem, not a governance one. Forty-seven formal petitions have been filed. All forty-seven have been lost.

Archival note (handwritten): Aldric the Undyed himself was, by modern records, an Undyed. This file has been reviewed by the Council and marked: irrelevant.
